Artificial Intelligence has rapidly emerged as a revolutionary and transformative technology in the last year. It has already started to reshape various aspects of our lives and will continue to do so in dramatic fashion. But exactly why AI is bad is something people never truly seemed to realize… until now.

There’s no hiding that AIConsequences focuses on the negative impacts that AI is posing, yet what was once a few months ago considered a doomsday blog, is now looking more like a realistic take on the inevitable consequences that these soulless strings of code are posing on humanity.

The truth of the matter is that more and more citizens of the world, and Americans specifically, are finally starting to understand that Artificial Intelligence isn’t the next great technology — but rather the last technology. They now understand why AI is bad.

The most devastating technology. According to a Reuters poll, 61% of Americans actually believe that AI will threaten all of civilization.

This article will look deeper into Reuter’s analysis of public opinion on technology, and discuss if people are too worried – or not worried enough. Two-Thirds of Americans Are Worried About AI. Are you?

The Genie is Out of the Bottle and AI Will Take Over

There’s no way to put this genie in the bottle. Globally, this is exploding,” said Senator Cory Booker as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified before the U.S Congress earlier this year. Altman himself is well aware of how dangerous AI can be with the current lack of regulations, yet this testimony did absolutely nothing to quelch his thirst for continued development.

OpenAI, which is the company behind ChatGPT, has come out about its lack of transparency – yet it continued to be left unchecked. Thousands upon thousands of AI experts, including massive moguls like Elon Musk and Bill Gates have tried to halt development, and protests all over the country have been to no avail.

The AI breakthrough has simply sparked too much competition among tech giants, such as Microsoft and Google, and this AI arms race is seriously starting to affect the outcomes of technology in general.

AI has taken center stage in public discourse, and finally, people are starting to understand that this technology really isn’t all that great. For example, the extreme risks of Chat-GPT, the rise of economic inequality, the problem with AI-generated porn, fake news, children’s safety, privacy, and mental health — just to name a few.

Reuters Article Analysis

The Reuters poll reveals that a vast majority of Americans are foreseeing adverse outcomes from AI. In fact, three times as many citizens are concerned than the number of those who remain unconcerned.

The poll was conducted online among 4,415 U.S. adults from May 9 to May 15, 2023 and carries a credibility interval of plus or minus 2 percentage points (just for the measure of accuracy).

Among the respondents:

61% believe that AI poses risks to humanity, only 22% think it won’t and the remaining 17% are uncertain.

Republicans seem to be the most worried, with a whopping 70% of Trump voters expressing worry, as opposed to 60% of Biden voters.

Interestingly, 32% of Christians also selected “strongly agree” when asked if AI presents risks to humanity, compared to only 24% of non-Christians.

Now this clearly shows that people are worried about Artificial Intelligence. There is absolutely no hiding this. Yet although efforts have been made to halt this, the pro-AI crowd is tossing out counterarguments such as “AI will raise people’s quality of life and help them become more competent”.

This is an insane argument.

This is like saying that we should embrace the hurricane crashing toward the city because it will fill all the swimming pools and provide water for the crops.

What point is having a higher quality of life if it is literally going to put an end to humanity???

It is no longer a discussion of striking a balance between the concerns of negative implications and recognizing its good sides; it’s about understanding that this technology is beyond dangerous and that if we don’t do anything about it soon we are all going to suffer dire consequences.

Two-thirds of Americans Understand Why AI is Bad and that is a Damn Good Thing

It is clear from this poll, and many other polls which you can take a look at here that Americans are starting to recognize the extreme dangers of Artificial Intelligence. And that is a very good thing.

The fact that people are finally starting to wake up, learn about the dangers and understand what an AI-controlled future will look like is the only thing that is giving me hope for the first time in a long time.

Two-Thirds of Americans Are Worried About AI

Yeah, some are of course going to constantly argue for the benefits because it makes their homework easier – but we can no longer deny that the risks it poses to humanity vastly outweigh the benefits and cannot be taken lightly.

We have to start taking action before it’s too late and understand that if this technology is left unchecked we are going to experience dire consequences. The future of our civilization, our children, and our humanity, is in the hands of a sociopathic string of code.

Learn why AI is bad. Don’t consume AI-generated content — and be a vocal proponent for legislation that will keep the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence in check.

Say NO to AI.
